In the year 2000, Russ recognized a need for GIS and technology-focused services tailored to the forest industry. Together with his business partners, the vision for Orbis, Inc. was born. In the early days of the company, Russ worked to help the industry adopt and implement new technology services. In his current role as president of Orbis, Russ oversees all aspects of programming, software and systems development, as well as the continuous technological growth for the company.

Russ is a licensed N.C. Land Surveyor who, prior to starting Orbis, worked as a GIS manager for Canal Forest Resources. He obtained both his Bachelor of Science and master’s degrees in GIS and Forestry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

“The company as a whole is still thriving, growing and innovating 20 years later,” said Russ. “Additionally, we’ve been able to provide our employees with a home where they feel they can grow and flourish, and that’s probably our most important accomplishment.”

Along with the vision to integrate more technology into the industry, Russ also knew he wanted to provide an avenue for fostering industry knowledge and career growth for others. He has been able to do just that. The majority of those under his leadership have been with the company for many years- a testament to his investment in people.

Away from the office, Russ can be found hunting, spending time with his family, as well as watching and coaching sports.
